4YFN and MWC for startups: working a 105,000-person tradeshow

4YFN puts startups inside MWC Barcelona's ~105,000-person tradeshow: who should go, how to work corporate delegations, and whether to take a booth or walk.

4YFN puts a startup inside MWC Barcelona’s roughly 105,000-person tradeshow, and it pays off for founders selling into connectivity, hardware, deeptech or enterprise mobile – because the density that matters here is buyer density, not investor density.

MWC 2027 runs 1-4 March 2027 at Fira Gran Via, Barcelona (mwcbarcelona.com, verified August 2026), with 4YFN co-located as usual. This guide covers the setup, who should actually go, and how to work a telecoms tradeshow that is nothing like a startup conference.

The setup: a tradeshow with a startup venue inside it

The published figures for MWC Barcelona’s March 2026 edition: approximately 105,000 attendees and 2,900 exhibitors. 4YFN (Four Years From Now) is the startup event inside it – a dedicated hall hosting 1,000+ startups. The GSMA does not publish a separate 4YFN headcount, so nobody can honestly tell you how many people walk that hall; what can be said is that a 4YFN badge gives access to the whole of MWC and, more importantly, that MWC’s crowd can and does drift through 4YFN.

Understand the species of event you are entering. MWC is a tradeshow: exhibitors are the point, deals are struck at stands and in hospitality suites, and the attendees are overwhelmingly people with commercial roles at operators, device makers, network vendors, cloud providers and the enterprises that buy from all of them. It is not a content festival with an expo attached. In the Sesamers five-jobs framework (pipeline, capital, brand, intel, community), MWC/4YFN is a pipeline and intel event. If your one written-down job is capital, this is the wrong week – Slush’s roughly one investor per four attendees (computed from published November 2025 figures: 13,000 attendees, 3,300 investors) exists precisely for that job.

Who should go – and who shouldn’t

The startups that consistently report strong MWCs share a profile: they sell something the MWC crowd buys. That means connectivity and network software, telco infrastructure and tooling, IoT and hardware, semiconductors and deeptech, cybersecurity for networks and devices, and enterprise mobile – anything where the buyer is an operator, an OEM, a systems integrator or a large enterprise IT organisation. For these companies MWC is arguably the highest buyer-density week in Europe.

Who should think twice: consumer apps without a distribution angle, pure SaaS with no telco or enterprise-mobility relevance, and any pre-product team hoping to fundraise. Investors do attend 4YFN, and the hall runs pitch programming, but the event’s centre of gravity is commercial. Go because your buyers are there, not because startups in general are.

Buyer density, not VC density

Most startup-event advice optimises for investor contact. At MWC the correct frame is different: of the ~105,000 attendees, the valuable ones for you are the product, procurement and partnership people inside the 2,900 exhibitors and the operator groups – a population no startup conference can match. One good conversation with the right person at an operator group can be worth an entire conference season of investor coffees, and the day-90/day-270 scoring the Sesamers method insists on applies doubly here: telco sales cycles are long, so judge the event by qualified technical follow-ups at day 90 and live commercial processes at day 270, not by scan counts. On lead costs, the honest vendor benchmarks are that raw badge scans run $100-300 per lead all-in, with qualified leads 3-5× higher – arithmetic that punishes anyone measuring an MWC stand by volume.

Working the corporate delegations

Operators and large corporates attend MWC as structured delegations: executives with pre-set schedules, scouting teams with briefs, and partner managers running back-to-back stand meetings. The practical consequences:

  • Meetings are booked weeks out. Delegation diaries close early; outreach in January and February, not on the Metro to the Fira.
  • Aim for the person with the brief, not the executive. The scout who is paid to find your category will route you further than a two-minute handshake with a CxO.
  • Use the programmes. GSMA and 4YFN run matchmaking and innovation programmes connecting startups to operators – imperfect, but they exist to solve exactly your access problem.
  • Hospitality suites are the real venue for the biggest players; getting into one requires an invitation, which is arranged before the event, which is another argument for early outreach.

Barcelona logistics: the Fira, hotels, and the week that eats the city

MWC happens at Fira Gran Via in L’Hospitalet, south-west of central Barcelona – a vast multi-hall complex, not a downtown conference centre. Hotels across the city book out and reprice aggressively for the week; the moment attendance is decided, book, because waiting costs real money and ends with a commute from Sitges. Budget time for the venue itself: security queues at peak entry, and long walks between halls – meetings in different halls need generous buffers. Evening life spreads across the city in operator dinners, national receptions and side events; the side-event thesis (the most valuable room is outside the venue) holds here, with the twist that MWC’s most valuable rooms are corporate hospitality, which is invitation-only and arranged in advance.

Booth or walk at 4YFN?

The Sesamers method treats walk, exhibit and speak as distinct modes with distinct economics. At 4YFN the choice is sharper than at most events because the buyer traffic is real but the costs compound: CEIR’s long-running benchmark puts floor space at 40.5% of an exhibitor’s direct spend, meaning the true bill is roughly 2.5× the stand price once build, travel, hotels-at-MWC-rates and four days of staffing land.

Walk (badge only)Exhibit at 4YFN
Best forFirst MWC; validating that your buyers attend; delegation meetingsProven buyer presence; demos that need hardware on a table
Cost shapeBadge, travel, hotel premiumStand ≈40% of true cost (CEIR); budget ≈2.5× stand price
Failure modeWandering 2,900 stands without a meeting listStaffing a quiet stand while your buyers sit in hospitality suites
RuleScheduled calendar or don’t flyThe stand is a meeting anchor, not a fishing net

Our default advice: walk your first MWC with a full meeting calendar, and exhibit the following year only if the walk proved your buyers were in the building. If you do take a stand, the full mechanics – layout, staffing, qualification, scan discipline – are in the tradeshow booth playbook.

Frequently asked questions

Is 4YFN worth it for fundraising?

Not as the primary job. Investors attend and 4YFN runs pitch programming, but no separate investor count is published and the event’s centre of gravity is commercial. If capital is the job, a dense investor event is a better buy; come to MWC when the job is pipeline in connectivity, hardware or enterprise mobile.

How many people actually visit the 4YFN hall?

Nobody can tell you honestly – the GSMA publishes MWC-wide figures (~105,000 attendees, 2,900 exhibitors in March 2026) but no separate 4YFN headcount. Treat 4YFN’s traffic as a share of MWC’s crowd that you have to earn with pre-booked meetings, not a guaranteed footfall.

When should I start booking meetings for MWC 2027?

Six to eight weeks out at the latest for delegation and operator meetings – their diaries close early. MWC 2027 runs 1-4 March at Fira Gran Via (mwcbarcelona.com, August 2026), so January is when the calendar work happens. Hotels should be booked the day attendance is decided.

Do I need a stand to get value from MWC?

No. A badge plus 15-20 confirmed meetings beats an unvisited stand, and walking costs a fraction of exhibiting once the CEIR 2.5× multiplier is applied to any stand price. Exhibit when you have prior evidence your buyers walk the hall and a demo that genuinely needs a table.

Keep going

This is one spoke of our events playbook. The pillar on startup events carries the full method – five jobs, three modes, day-90/day-270 scoring.
