Kyiv-based Buntar Aerospace has raised $16 million led by Freedom Fund, with Gardar, Iron Wolf Capital and Autonomy Capital joining, to scale production of its GPS-independent reconnaissance drones and take its Buntar Copilot mission software to international markets.

The round, announced on Monday 5 October, doubles the company’s total funding to $30 million in barely three years of existence – and it says as much about where defence capital is heading as it does about one drone maker.

A syndicate assembled around combat evidence

Freedom Fund led the $16 million round, joined by an international growth equity investor that stays unnamed, alongside Gardar, Iron Wolf Capital and Autonomy Capital. The lead is a fitting one: set up in 2022 by People.ai founder Oleg Rohynskyy, Freedom Fund was the first venture fund dedicated to Ukrainian defence tech and counts more than 30 of the country’s startups in its portfolio (the fund’s own count, August 2026).

The company says the capital will go into expanding manufacturing capacity, accelerating product development and recruiting engineers and managers – and, more tellingly, into taking its dual-use products beyond Ukraine’s borders. The raise brings total funding to $30 million, after a $10.4 million round led by Axon Enterprise with Norwegian consortium Munkene AS in March 2026, and a first $200,000 cheque from the co-founders of ride-hailing company Uklon in 2024.

No stage label was attached to the round. At this pace, nobody in Kyiv is pausing to name them.

Four hours aloft, no GPS required

Founded in the summer of 2023, Buntar Aerospace builds the Buntar-3, an electric vertical take-off reconnaissance drone that stays airborne for up to four hours and is designed to operate where GPS and satellite links are jammed into silence – which, on Ukraine’s frontline, is everywhere that matters. Its second product, Buntar Copilot, is mission software that plans flight sequences, coordinates camera feeds and predicts mission scenarios so operators make fewer errors under fire.

“Every Buntar system is built to fly, sense, and adapt on its own, so skilled people can focus on decisions,” said co-founder Bohdan Sas in the announcement.

Both products are deployed with Ukrainian frontline units – the kind of customer reference no demo day can manufacture. These systems have survived three years of electronic warfare that reconfigures itself weekly, a product cycle no Western test range can simulate.

A $19.8bn market moving at wartime speed

The market Buntar sells into is large and compounding. The global military drone market stood at $19.83 billion in 2025 and is forecast to reach $52.31 billion by 2034, an 11.1% CAGR from 2026, with Europe the second-largest region at an estimated $5.82 billion in 2026 (Fortune Business Insights, September 2026).

For scale against our own records: Portugal’s Tekever closed a €498 million Series D for its military drones in September 2026, the top of the European band, while Kyiv’s Osavul raised €8.5 million from 33N Ventures for hybrid threat intelligence only last week. A $16 million unlabelled round places Buntar firmly in the scale-up bracket of Ukrainian defence tech – small next to Tekever, remarkable for a company that did not exist in 2022.

Growth capital crosses a border procurement still hesitates at

So what does this round actually signal? International growth capital is walking into territory where most European institutions still hesitate. Axon Enterprise, the US public-safety group, took its position in March 2026; now an unnamed growth equity fund has followed. The reality is that European defence procurement remains slow and consensus-bound, while the systems being procured against are iterating weekly on the frontline. The good news is that capital has stopped waiting for procurement reform: combat-proven Ukrainian systems are becoming the reference hardware the rest of Europe benchmarks against, and the money is moving there first.

Two things are worth watching from here: whether Buntar’s dual-use push lands its first customer outside Ukraine, and whether more European funds – not only American backers and Vilnius-based Iron Wolf Capital – show up in the next Kyiv syndicate. The Baltics have understood proximity. Much of the rest of the continent is still reading the market reports.
