Ultra Long Duration Energy Storage Project Development Studies (Relaunch) 2026
Innovate UK and UKRI relaunched this grant competition to fund project development studies for ultra long duration electrochemical energy storage - technology built to hold power for far longer than standard lithium-ion batteries, smoothing renewable supply over days rather than hours.
UK-registered businesses of any size can lead an application for a share of £3 million, with individual projects funded at £350,000 to £700,000. Collaboration is allowed with academic institutions, charities, not-for-profits, public sector bodies and research and technology organisations, but academic institutions cannot lead. Projects must run 3 to 9 months, starting by 1 January 2027 and ending by 30 September 2027.
