Mistral AI raises €3B Series D led by Samsung at a €21B+ valuation
Samsung Electronics leads a €3 billion Series D in Mistral AI at a €21B+ valuation - a European equity record that puts sovereign AI on a real balance sheet.

Mistral AI has raised €3 billion in a Series D led by Samsung Electronics at a post-money valuation above €21 billion – what the Paris company calls the largest equity round ever closed by a European tech firm.
We spent two years being told Europe could not capitalise its own AI champion – and this morning Seoul, Brussels-backed capital and BlackRock queued up to do exactly that. Below, I lay out the round, the company behind it, the market it is chasing, and what a Korean electronics giant leading Europe’s flagship AI deal actually signals.
Three billion euros, with Seoul at the head of the table
Mistral announced the round on 8 September 2026: €3 billion in Series D funding at a post-money valuation of more than €21 billion, led by Samsung Electronics with Scaleup Europe Fund (managed by EQT) and PSG Equity as co-leads. New investors include Advent, funds and accounts managed by BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The existing cap table followed on: a16z, ASML, Bpifrance, Eurazeo, General Catalyst, Index Ventures, Lightspeed, Nvidia and Salesforce Ventures among them, per the company’s announcement.
The company says the capital will expand its frontier research, scale its compute capacity for training, build out infrastructure and accelerate commercial and international expansion. CEO Arthur Mensch put the thesis in one line: “Who controls intelligence, and who can adapt it to their own needs, matters as much as how powerful it is.”
The scale-up is brutal even by AI standards. Twelve months ago Mistral closed a €1.7 billion Series C led by ASML at an €11.7 billion valuation (Euronews, Sep 2026); the new round nearly doubles that valuation in a year and, by the company’s own account, sets a European equity record.
From a 2023 Paris lab to 125 enterprise deployments
Founded in 2023 by Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix, Mistral AI builds open-weight large language models, the Le Chat assistant and enterprise APIs – the “sovereign, open-weight AI” positioning is in the funding announcement’s own title. The company now counts more than 125 enterprise customers across 20 countries, Airbus, ASML and HSBC among them, per its announcement. Management told Euronews it expects to pass a billion in annual recurring revenue by the end of 2026.
Remember: this is a company younger than most of the seed-stage startups in our database. The good news is that the gap between Europe’s AI ambition and its cheque-writing capacity, the one we have all complained about at every conference since 2023, just narrowed by €3 billion.
A market compounding at 40.8% a year
The market Mistral sells into is expanding at a pace that makes even a €21 billion valuation legible. Grand View Research (June 2026) sizes the global generative AI market at $29.6 billion in 2026, growing at a 40.8% CAGR to $324.7 billion by 2033. On those numbers, the sector Mistral leads in Europe will be roughly eleven times larger within seven years.
For scale against the rest of our fundraising data: this single round is six hundred times the €5 million seed Zeit AI announced last week, and it dwarfs the $125 million Series B iPronics raised to rewire AI data centres – until now one of the larger European AI infrastructure rounds of the year. One deal has redrawn the axis of every European funding chart for 2026.
Sovereign AI now has a balance sheet
So what does it mean when Samsung leads Europe’s biggest equity round? Look at who anchors Mistral’s last two rounds: ASML, the Dutch company whose lithography machines make advanced chips possible, and now Samsung, one of the few companies on earth that manufactures them. The hardware layer of the AI economy is buying into Europe’s model layer – not as a customer, as an owner.
The European signal is just as loud. Scaleup Europe Fund, the EU-backed vehicle managed by EQT, co-led the round, Bpifrance re-upped, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg took a direct stake. A government on the cap table used to mean a grant and a plaque; it now means a seat at a €21 billion table. What we are seeing is sovereign AI moving from keynote vocabulary to balance-sheet fact.
What to watch from here is compute. Mensch told Euronews the company’s owned compute will grow around 100% over the next five years, on top of an existing €4 billion European data centre investment. The fact remains that models are won and lost on infrastructure, and that is where this €3 billion will be visible first – in concrete, cooling and European megawatts rather than in press releases.
Europe’s goal was never to mint one giant valuation and call it sovereignty. The real one is an AI stack owned end to end – chips, compute, models, customers – built and governed here. Mistral just funded its layer of it. Let’s build the rest!
