Athos (Strüngmann Family Office)

Munich, Germany

Investment thesis

Athos is the single family office of Andreas and Thomas Strüngmann, based in Munich. It makes direct, long-hold equity investments with a concentration in biotechnology and life sciences, and is best known as the anchor shareholder in BioNTech, where it has held a controlling stake. The office takes large positions and stays with companies over long periods rather than running a fixed fund cycle, backing science-led businesses in Germany and internationally.

Athos is the Munich-based investment office of the twin brothers Andreas and Thomas Strüngmann, established after the 2005 sale of generics maker Hexal to Novartis, and operating through vehicles including ATHOS KG, Athos Service GmbH and Santo Holding. It invests its own balance sheet, which lets it hold positions for well over a decade without fund-life pressure, and is best known as the anchor investor in BioNTech. Focus areas are oncology, mRNA and gene therapy, biosimilars and synthetic biology, with selective health-adjacent tech deals. Recent activity includes AAVantgarde Bio’s $141M Series B, iOmx’s €65M Series B and a stake in Doctolib. Other holdings include Immatics, Tubulis, Formycon, Antheia and AMSilk.
