What counts as digital health here

Any company applying software, AI or connected devices to clinical care, diagnostics, monitoring or health-system operations – ambient clinical documentation, remote patient monitoring, diagnostics AI, longevity and ageing science, and hospital or care-coordination software. We include medtech-adjacent digital products and exclude pure biotech and drug discovery, which are filed under Biotech and pharma.

The 8 sub-verticals

Where the companies are

Where the sector stands

Three eras, not a straight line

2020-21
The telehealth spike

Pandemic-era demand pulled forward years of adoption for video consultation and remote triage. Much of it reversed once in-person care resumed.

2022-24
The clinical-evidence filter

Buyers stopped accepting a slick interface as proof of value. Companies without FDA clearance, CE marking or peer-reviewed outcomes data struggled to close hospital deals.

2025-26
AI documentation and system-level plays

The largest rounds now go to ambient scribes and platforms aiming to become the clinic operating system, not point solutions – Tandem Health's raise is the clearest example.

Three open questions

Where informed people in this sector genuinely disagree

Does an ambient scribe actually reduce clinician burnout, or just shift the work?

Every ambient-documentation vendor on this desk cites a time-saved statistic; almost none publish an independent audit.

The case forCompanies like Tandem Health report clinicians spending meaningfully less time on admin, self-reported but corroborated across a large user base – and the demand signal from health systems adopting these tools at scale is itself evidence.
The case againstSomeone still has to review and correct the AI-generated note before it enters the record, and that review burden is real, just less visible than typing. Self-reported time savings from the vendor's own survey are not independent evidence.
Where we land: The time saved is real for routine visits; the reviewing burden is real for complex ones. The honest claim is net time saved across a typical caseload, not elimination of admin work.
Is the EU's regulatory path a genuine moat, or does it just slow European health AI down?

CE marking and clinical validation take longer in Europe than the US regulatory path for comparable software.

The case forA cleared CE mark is trusted by European hospital buyers in a way an unregulated tool is not, and the same rigour that costs time also filters out companies that cannot survive contact with real clinical data.
The case againstUS competitors ship faster, iterate on real usage sooner, and often have a working product with paying hospitals before a European equivalent finishes its first validation study.
Where we land: It is a moat once cleared and a cost until then. Companies that treat the regulatory process as core product work, not an afterthought, come out ahead; those that treat it as a checkbox lose the time without gaining the trust.
Can longevity and ageing-focused biotech actually be underwritten by venture returns?

Longevity has attracted serious capital, but most interventions being funded will not have outcome data for a decade or more.

The case forThe underlying biology of ageing is a genuinely large, underexplored market, and several longevity-adjacent companies are already generating revenue from diagnostics and monitoring products well before any longevity drug reads out.
The case againstVenture funds have a ten-year horizon and ageing biology plays out over decades; the return case for most longevity bets rests on an exit before the core hypothesis is actually proven.
Where we land: The diagnostics and monitoring layer around longevity is fundable on normal venture terms today. The therapeutic bets are closer to patient capital or philanthropic funding than standard venture math, whatever the pitch deck says.

How to get in

Three audiences, three short lists

If you are building

  1. Start the regulatory conversation with a notified body in your first six months, not your third year.
  2. Get one hospital or clinic to use your product in a real workflow before you pitch clinical impact – a pilot beats a deck every time.
  3. Decide early whether you are a point solution or a platform play; the funding available and the buyer conversation differ enormously.
  4. Pick two events: one clinical buyer show, one investor-facing deal room.

If you are investing

  1. Ask for the clinical evidence status explicitly – published, submitted, or aspirational – before you ask about the TAM slide.
  2. Underwrite the regulatory clock as a real cost, not a formality; it is the single biggest timeline risk in this vertical.
  3. Check whether the buyer is the clinician, the hospital administrator or the patient – the sales cycle is entirely different for each.
  4. Use the funding desk to see who actually led rounds in the last 24 months.

If you are buying or adopting

  1. Ask for the CE mark or equivalent clearance before anything else – an unregulated clinical claim is a red flag, not a growth stage.
  2. Request a reference site using the product in your specialty, not an adjacent one.
  3. Ask what data the vendor needs from your systems and how it is secured – integration and data governance kill more deals than price.
  4. Use the startup desk for a shortlist; use events for discovery, not for due diligence.

Glossary

Terms that keep coming up on this vertical

Ambient clinical documentation
AI that listens to a doctor-patient consultation and generates the clinical note automatically, reducing manual documentation time.
CE marking
The EU conformity mark required to legally sell a medical device or software as a medical device in the European market.
Clinic operating system
A platform positioning that extends beyond a single task (like note-taking) to manage patient flows and broader clinical operations.
Remote patient monitoring (RPM)
Technology that tracks a patient's health data outside a clinical setting, typically at home, and flags issues to a care team.
IRIS+ metrics
A standardised set of impact metrics used by impact investors to measure and report social or environmental outcomes, sometimes applied in health-impact investing.

Frequently asked

About this vertical and how we cover it

Is this the same as biotech and pharma?
No – biotech and pharma covers drug discovery and development. Digital health is software, AI and connected devices applied to care delivery, diagnostics and health-system operations.
Why are only 4 investors verified out of the tagged funds?
Every fund shown on the investor desk has a disclosed ticket range or fund size we can verify directly. The rest carry the vertical tag but have not yet published enough data to rank honestly.
How often does this page change?
The numbers come from the four desks and move weekly. The written analysis is reviewed quarterly and the review date at the top is the honest one – if it is stale, the analysis is stale.
Can I suggest a company or fund for the desks?
Yes. Use the suggest links on each desk. We verify before publishing; paid placement does not get you onto a ranking or directory.
