Gaussian Scout, presented at the festival as Virtual Location Scouting, is a browser-based digital location finder that a whole production team can share. It turns Gaussian splats, XGRIDS scans and photogrammetry into shared 3D environments, where directors, cinematographers and heads of department can walk a location, frame shots and take measurements before the shoot. The festival lists a functional prototype validated in a relevant environment, and a subscription launch is targeted for autumn 2027.
The tool is built by Finnish cinematographer and previs artist Antti Ahokoivu through his Helsinki company Laskos Virtuals Oy. It grew out of the communication gaps he saw between departments on his own shoots. Laskos lists Business Finland, AVEK, the Finnish Film Foundation and EU programs among the partners of its R&D work. No outside equity round has been disclosed.
At the Zinemaldia Startup Challenge 2026 it won both Best European Project (€10,000) and the Entrepreneurship Mention (€3,000), the only finalist to take two awards.
