What counts as foodtech here
Any company applying technology to how food is grown, processed, moved, sold or recovered – from soil biologicals through fermentation and processing equipment to waste valorisation. We include upstream agritech and exclude restaurant software, delivery marketplaces and grocery retail, which are consumer marketplaces wearing a food label.

Where the sector stands
Three eras, not a straight line
Record deployment into alternative protein at valuations set on narrative. Two of the largest European rounds of the period have since been written down.
Down rounds, quiet shutdowns, and six sector conferences folding. Generalist funds left; specialists stayed and got pickier.
Funding flat but diligence-heavy. Money concentrates in ag inputs, supply chain and processing – the parts with existing buyers.
Three open questions
Where informed people in this sector genuinely disagree
The category raised on a cost curve that assumed scale would arrive by 2025. It did not, and the gap between production cost and the commodity it replaces is still measured in multiples rather than percentages.
Vertical farms raised on unit economics that assumed energy and labour would fall faster than they have. Several European operators have since restructured or closed.
Novel-food authorisation, labelling rules and farm-input approvals slow European founders relative to US peers – and also raise the bar for anyone copying them later.
The novel-food path
Indicative stages for an EU novel-food authorisation – not legal advice
Establish whether your product needs authorisation at all. Consultation with a member-state authority resolves the question and is cheap relative to guessing wrong.
3-6 months €15-40kCompositional, toxicological and allergenicity data assembled to EFSA's format. This is the real cost and the stage where most first-time applicants lose a year.
9-18 months €250k-1MNine-month statutory clock that pauses every time information is requested – and it is usually requested. Plan for the clock to stop at least once.
9-15 months Staff timeCommission and member states. Once listed, the product can be sold under the authorised conditions – the commercial work starts here, not ends.

Three audiences, three short lists
If you are building
- Identify which of the six chain stages you sell into – it determines your buyer, your cycle and your funder.nFind a paying customer before a plant. Every fund on the investor desk said this unprompted.nCheck the regulatory path at Stage 1 in your first six months, not your third year.nPick two events: one deal room, one buyer room.
If you are investing
- Start on the investor desk filtered to stage and ticket – not a conference badge scan.nUnderwrite buyer concentration and regulatory clock before TAM slides.nMeet operators who already sell into the chain stage you are writing about.nUse the funding desk to see who actually led rounds in the last 24 months.
If you are buying or partnering
- Map the chain stage you need, then the sub-vertical – not the buzzword.nPrefer companies with a named pilot or offtake over deck-stage claims.nUse events for discovery; use the startup desk for diligence lists.nAsk for titre, offtake and regulatory status in the first call.
